kira ball

Kira Ball (1976, Sóller, Mallorca)

Ball’s large scale, site specific installations are inspired in nature’s organic forms, and untamed vitality. Her sculptural pieces colonise the spaces they inhabit, claiming territory inch by inch, holding their balance in apparently impossible equilibrium. Her installations appear to wind their way across walls, ceilings and stairways, responding to changing lighting conditions with their moving shadows, and gently wavering with the vibrations generated by the visitor’s movements as they walk close to the works. Translucency and an infinite palette of porcelain whites are the characteristic colors in Ball’s installations. Each one of the pieces which comprise the installations are hand crafted by the artist one by one in her Binissalem studio.

She earned a BA Honors in Contemporary Ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts (London) in 2000 and decided to return to her roots in Mallorca where she embarked on a period of introspection, research and technical experimentation. During this period, she develops an intimate and unique visual language which explores the material qualities of porcelain, its response to changing light conditions, the effects of translucency and the material’s organic response to the vibrations created by human movement. In 2007, La Caja Blanca celebrates Ball’s first solo show within the framework of Noves Presencies a government-led initiative designed to identify talented artists emerging onto the international art scenes. Soon after she is comissioned by numerous public and private entities to create large scale site specific installations which respond to historic buildings and contemporary domestic spaces.

Kira Ball is represented by La Caja Blanca (Palma de Mallora / London). For further information, contact: info@lacajablanca.com

"Chasing Morphos" Solo show, site specific installation at La Caja Blanca gallery
